Arwen: Do you remember when we first met?
Aragorn: I thought I had wandered into a dream.
Arwen: Long years have passed. You did not have the cares you carry now. Do you remember what I told you?
Aragorn: You said you’d bind yourself to me, forsaking the immortal life of your people.
Arwen: And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.
[hands him her pendant]
Arwen: I choose a mortal life.
Aragorn: You cannot give me this.
Arwen: It is mine to give to whom I will. Like my heart.

Fellowship of the Ring (movie)

Anonymous asked, for the Middle Earth Quote Meme, “Lotr movieverse, meme no. 9 😉”, #9 being the most romantic quote.

Okay, another CRUCIAL question: who is more beautiful, Galadriel or Arwen? Galadriel got Feanor enamored with her (sort of…) and saw the Trees and her hair inspired the silmarils… But Arwen is supposed to look like Luthien who is the fairest being ever. So?

It always comes down to the hair for Tolkien: ‘Gimli Glóin’s son, have you your axe ready?’  ‘Nay, lord,’ said Gimli, ‘but I can speedily fetch it, if there be need.’  ‘You shall judge,’ said Éomer. ‘For there are certain rash words concerning the Lady in the Golden Wood that lie still between us. And… Continue reading Okay, another CRUCIAL question: who is more beautiful, Galadriel or Arwen? Here’s part two of The Women Who Shaped Middle Earth (here’s where you can read part one.) A five-part series, I’m looking at all the women who had a significant impact on Tolkien’s world. There’ll be some overlap (for example, Haleth and Galadriel both appear in other segments as well), so if you feel I left something out, that might be why, but send me an ask anyway, as I’ll be editing all of this before offering the complete version for download as a .pdf.

This guide, as well as one other guide (to be released later this month) is part of my contribution to Legendarium Ladies April. If you don’t already know about the event, definitely check it out! And if you have any lady-centric questions or issues you’d like to see me make a post for, now’s the time to let me know!

And if you think this is interesting, check out my already completed Atanamili: The Women of the First Age series, which covers all the (mortal) women of the First Age.

Why doesn’t Arwen sail to the West after Aragorn died, and instead goes off to Lorien to fade away? Legolas and Gimli sailed West after Aragorn died, so it’s not like she couldn’t hitch a ride with them or anything… And isn’t her son now the King? So she could hang around and stay with him if she didn’t want to sail West? I just don’t understand why Arwen had to go off to Lorien to fade away when either she could sail West and reunite with Elrond, etc. or stay with her son? Thanks :)

Arwen couldn’t go to Valinor even if she wanted to – when she chose mortality, she gave up that right. (Gimli and the ringbearers were very special exceptions to that rule.)  Arwen’s children were all full grown, and I don’t see any reason why she couldn’t stay with them at the end of her life.… Continue reading Why doesn’t Arwen sail to the West after Aragorn died, and instead goes off to Lorien to fade away?
