To be honest, I’m pretty confused too. So, here’s the situation: Barahir was the second son of Bregor, previous lord of the House of Beor. So when his father died Barahir’s brother Bregolas became lord. Barahir had a son, and Bregolas had two, so both brothers had heirs. Yet, when Bregolas dies in the Dagor… Continue reading Barahir, Lord of the House of Beor?

Tolkien’s Most Beautiful Relationships
Okay, I’ve limited this post to the First Age, because I really felt like digging in to that period’s particular brand of angst tonight. And I only managed to narrow it down to the five most beautiful relationships, so here they are (in no particular order.) FEANOR AND FINGOLFIN Why: This one’s probably going to… Continue reading Tolkien’s Most Beautiful Relationships
The Ring of Barahir
The Ring of Barahir actually has a really interesting history! It starts way, way back in the First Age, with Finrod Felagund, King of Nargothrond. The ring was originally his, and he gave it to Barahir, Lord of the House of Beor. They had fought together in the Dagor Bragollach, and Finrod was surrounded by… Continue reading The Ring of Barahir
Romantic Quotes From The Silmarillion
Aaaw, that’s lovely! 🙂 And the Cirdan/ring quote does actually work pretty fantastically in a wedding setting (“’Take now this Ring,’ he said; ‘for thy labors and thy cares will be heavy, but in all it will support thee and defend thee from weariness.’”) In my personal opinion, if you’re looking for romantic/wedding quotes in… Continue reading Romantic Quotes From The Silmarillion

So, first off make sure you’ve taken a look at this post summarizing the different afterlives of Middle Earth’s inhabitants, in case you haven’t already. The idea seems to be that Mandos has many halls within the overall complex, and the different races are in different halls. So wherever the men stop briefly on their… Continue reading Okay so I know that different races go to different areas of Valinor when they pass away, but is there anything that physically keeps those races from interacting if they so choose? “Luthien, a Mere Maiden”
Ah, yes. The “mere maiden” comment. As I’ve mentioned before I find the discussion of Tolkien and sexism/feminism/general femaleness to be very interesting, so I’ve read my fair share of essays/articles/blog posts on the subject. And, without fail, if a writer is arguing that Tolkien was sexist, they’ll mention that he referred to Luthien, arguably… Continue reading “Luthien, a Mere Maiden”
