What a fun project! Well, hereβs what I can tell you: Bilbo and the dwarves left Bag End on April 27th, made it to Rivendell by Midsummer, and arrived in Laketown on September 22. So all in all it was about five months. As for distance… Tolkien never got all that specific with the distances… Continue reading My friend and I wanted to do a sort of walk-along with the Hobbit as a sort of exercise project. I guess what I’m asking is how long their journey was, both in terms of miles and months! We want to do it up until Durin’s Day, which is my birthday this year!

The Noldor and the Sun
When Tolkien talks about the creation of the sun and the moon in the Silmarillion, he includes a short paragraph listing the names given to these two objects by the elves. Mostly, I think, because he just really liked naming things (the lovable linguistic nerd that he was), but it actually gives us some interesting… Continue reading The Noldor and the Sun
Hello! I just discovered this blog recently and I am amazed by all that you’ve written about Arda! I was just wondering (and I’m sorry that this is a really personal question) what religion you are, if anything? I only ask because I’ve seen you talk about Catholicism in some older posts, and sometimes your information isn’t really accurate (i’m Catholic myself), and I wondered where you got your information, or experience, with Tolkien’s religious beliefs? My whole family’s Catholic, and I spent 16 years in Catholic school, so the majority of my information about Catholicism comes from a combination of my own experience, talking to my much-more-actively-religious relatives, and years and years of religion/theology classes. The reason you’re probably feeling disconnected to some of what I’ve… Continue reading Hello! I just discovered this blog recently and I am amazed by all that you’ve written about Arda! A kind of tangential question but I’m curious: how do you actually know as much as you do?! I mean, you give sources and stuff for your answers but I know from uni that finding the right source as quickly as you must be doing to give such regular answers is NOT easy or fast, so it seems to me that you must have memorised an astonishing amount of information complete with sources! What I guess I’m saying is extraordinarily good job running this blog. It must be a lot harder than most realise.
First of all, thank you so much! This message definitely made me smile π Now, on to your actual question: To be completely honest, when I started this blog a year and a half ago, I had only read LotR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and a couple chapters of The Unfinished Tales. It’s because of… Continue reading A kind of tangential question but I’m curious: how do you actually know as much as you do?!
